I’ve only been here for a session, but I am already convinced that Newlands is the best Test ground in the world, even though it is filled with a reported 10,000 travelling England supporters. I think it might even top Lord’s! It’s really hot and sunny, but unlike at the WACA they have anticipated that this might be the case and covered most of the open stands with light awnings, so the majority of seat will have shade for at least part of the day. The exception is the temporary stand my seat is in – it’s behind a raided grass bank, about 50m from the boundary at its closest point and in full sun all day. Fortunately, during my usual pre-game perambulation I inadvertently found myself on the shady grass bank below the scorecard, and once I was there it would have been churlish to leave, so I am watching in beautiful dappled shade, and with the most stunning view in world cricket – Table Mountain – right behind the players. Idyllic.
